Gender identity issues in a child are noticed in b/w 2-4 years old. Gid in childhood is linked with separation anxiety disorder. Gender dysphoria: distress that some people feel when they have the deep and persistent conviction that there is a discrepancy b/w their autonomic sexual makeup and their psychological sense of self as man, woman, boy or girl. 1 attempts to alter the body to suit the person"s psychology. Other is designed to alter the psychology to match the person"s body. For body alterations, person must undergo 6-12 months of psychotherapy. Cosmetic surgery; male-to-female transsexual may removal of face hair. Sex-reassignment surgery: operation where the existing genitalia are altered to make them more like those of the opposite sex. Sex-reassignment surgery more chosen by men than women. Successful adaptation in new role for atleast 1 year. Good understanding of actual limitations and consequences of surgery. Psychotherapy in context of an established gender identity.
