Started a private practice, treating people with nervous disorders and began developing the idea that portions of human mind were outside conscious awareness unconscious mind. Interpretation of dreams unconscious mind expressed in dreams, which contained clues to innermost secrets, desires, and motives. Treatment approach the talking cure; some thought it was stupid, others didn"t. Adult personality is a result of how the person as a child coped with his sexual and aggressive urges; many found this to be incorrect. Psychic energy forces that motivated people to do/not do things; operates according to the law of conservation of energy so it is constant throughout lifetime and your personality is a redirection of this energy. Instincts are strong innate forces that provide all the energy in the psychic system; influenced by darwin self-preservation instincts and sexual instincts. He later put them together into one life instinct; also talked about a death instinct.
