Document Summary

Stereotypes: beliefs that certain attributes are characteristic of members of particular groups. Prejudice: a negative attitude of affective response toward a certain group and its individual members. Modern racism: prejudice directed of other racial groups that exist alongside rejection of explicitly racial beliefs. Implicit association test (iat): a technique for revealing non-conscious prejudices toward particular groups. Priming: a procedure used to increase the accessibility of a concept or schema (for example, a stereotype). I(cid:374) (cid:373)u(cid:272)h of today"s wester(cid:374) (cid:449)orld, prejudi(cid:272)e a(cid:374)d dis(cid:272)ri(cid:373)i(cid:374)atio(cid:374) are fro(cid:449)(cid:374)ed upo(cid:374). This trend has led to an explicit rejection of prejudiced attitudes that nonetheless is sometimes accompanied by subtle and often non-conscious discriminatory behavior. The schism between what people consciously maintain and how they sometimes feel or act has led to the development of various indirect measures of attitudes toward different groups. These include the implicit association test and priming procedures, which measure the degree to which different groups trigger positive of negative associations.
