Document Summary

Provide the participants with the informed consent information. Explain to participants why the experiment is being conducted. Straightforward manipulations = operationally define independent variables using instructions and stimuli presentations. Stimuli can be presented verbally, in written form, via videotape, or with a computer. Mundane realism = whenever a study mimic experiences and conditions present in everyday life. Staged manipulations/event manipulation = stage events that occur during the experiment in order to manipulate the independent variable successfully. Used when the researcher is trying to create some psychological stage in the participants ex, frustration, anger etc. or a stage manipulation may be necessary to stimulate some situation that occurs in the real world. A lot of ingenuity and require some acting ability. Experimental realism = when a study engages and involves participant sin. The simplest experimental design has 2 levels of the independent variable. Manipulation strength = considered when making operational definitions. Must make the manipulation as strong as possible.
