Culture, family, and other social bonds all influence how we respond to different situations and stimuli. Sociocultural factors have the potential to influence whether or not certain genes are expressed. Some changes in the gene expression are passed on from generation to generation. Intrasexual selection = a situation in which members of the same sex compete in order to win the opportunity to mate with members of the opposite sex. The animals most likely to become dominant are the strongest and/or smartest, and therefore the most fit for that time and place. Could actively shape its environment to suit its needs: homo erectus. Harnessed the use of fire and make precise hunting tools. Each advance in the quality of tools stimulated further advances. Able to adapt to different evolutionary conditions: homo sapiens.
