Developed by sigmund freud, says that personality is shaped largely by the unconscious. Libido (life instinct): focused on pleasure, survival and avoidance of pain. Death instinct: unconscious desire to resolve all life problems through death. Id: largely unconscious and responsible for out drives to avoid pain and seek pleasure. Superego: moral judgements, strives for perfection, self love, avoid guilt: oral (0-1): mouth (sucking, chewing, eating) Adult: oral aggression (verbal abuse); oral passive (smoking, overeating: anal (1-3): anus (bowel and bladder control) Adult: anal retentive (neat), anal expulsive (disorganized: phallic (3-6): genitals (masturbation) Females jealous that they don"t have a penis. Electra complex (females attracted to dad: latency (6-12): sexual feelings dormant, genital (12+): sexual interests mature. Any issue from prior stages may manifest in our interactions while trying to form partnership with others.
