Gil chapter 14: ethical issues in health and health care. Physician-assisted suicide has become legalized in canada but there are specific guidelines and rules that must be followed; some are for this while others are against it. Ethics: people think of it as difference bw right/wrong, associated with moral/religious values. Involves well-founded standards of right and wrong that prescribe what humans ought to do, usually in terms of rights, obligations, benefits to society, fairness, or specific virtues. Involves continuous reflection of our own morality and that of broader social institutions: basically, a dynamic set of moral standards that provide guide to determining what is right and wrong. It"s complex bc everyone has their own perspective on what"s right or wrong; also because of the availability of resources some people have to be denied or put on waiting lists for treatment. Ethical challenges arise when right course of action isn"t clear.
