Home being woman"s place is an important principle of architectural design and urban planning (pg 170: explicit principle for a male-dominated, conservative society. Neighbourhoods designed for women constrain them physical, socially, and economically (pg 171) & people are frustrated when these constrains don"t work. Tend to make a false distinction between city and suburb . Urban region as a whole is used to separate home from work. Single family homes grouped in class-segregated areas, near freeways and malls. Most homes are owned by skilled, white males who are more likely to own it than women or minority groups. Commute to their work in the center/sub-urban rings. Major corporations in the 1920s planned for better housing for white male skilled workers and their families to eliminate industrial conflict (pg 172) Men received family wages and became home owners while women became home managers. Home was essentially a place for the sexual division of labour.
