BIOB50H3 Chapter Notes - Chapter 4: Acclimatization, Hemoglobin, Heat Capacity
Document Summary
Chapter 4 (pg. 84-97: each species has a range of environmental tolerances that determines its potential geographic distribution. Species distribution: physical environment limit species distribution and effects survival and reproduction is 2 ways, 1) effects ability to obtain the energy and resources for survival (ex. Rates of photosynthesis, abundance of prey, etc. : 2) extreme environmental conditions effects the organisms tolerance (temp, water supply, [chemical], etc. : actual distribution may not match potential distribution, climate envelope: the range of climate conditions under which a species occurs . Hypoxia is a lack of oxygen and it occurs when the amount of o2 pick up by haemoglobin decreases: animals are able to change their physiology, morphology, or behaviour to lessen the effect of environmental changes. This is known as acclimatization: acclimatization is a short term, reversible process. Adaptation: populations responds to environmental variation through adaptation, when a species is initially introduced to an environment, it is stressful.
