Biology: exploring the diversity of life volume 2. Charles darwin is recognized for his focus on changes in species that led to his proposing the theory of evolution by natural selection. Fossils have contributed strongly to our knowledge of evolution. These studies of the past and evolution help us today by helping us understand the context of what we see before us. Greek philosopher 384-322 b. c. e who observed nature and natural history, the branch of biology that examines the form and variety of organisms in their natural environments. He believed that both inanimate objects and living species had fixed characteristics. Francis established the importance of observation, experimentation, and inductive reasoning: other scientists proposed mechanistic theories to explain physical events, notably nicolaus copernicus, galileo galilei, rene descartes and sir isaac newton. Three new disciplines promoted a growing awareness of change: biogeography, comparative morphology, geology.
