Immigration challenges and reaffirms national identity, sovereignty, and state control that have been linked to citizenship: studied at two levels: citizenship within national borders, and placing borders into question. Four dimensions: legal status, rights, participation, sense of belonging: these four dimensions cut across each other, reinforcing or undermining the boundaries and content of citizenship. If rights are understood broadly and guaranteed regardless of country of birth, immigrants" legal equality and participation might challenge existing understandings of belonging.
