SOC362H5 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5-6: Wasted Talent, Homophily
Document Summary
Multiple structural factors produce gender differences in managerial networks. Homophily - individuals to interact with others who share common attribute (gender, race etc. ) Range - how diverse an individuals social ties are - networks that extend beyond the occupational organization. Tie-strength - the closeness of relationships regardless of interaction frequency. Women are more likely to have information contacts outside their groups (wider ranges than men) Women may need more resources in the form of close and external ties in a broader array of network types. High-potential women have a wider-range than high-potential men. Women in japan, though many hold degrees, few have jobs that they studied for - many work in cafes or in general low-paying jobs if at all. A general bias against women in corporations - if you take a leave, and then want to come back, you likely won"t get your job back unless someone vouches for you (you will also have a lower pay)
