Occupations confer prestige - ranking of social status based on subjective interpretations. Education, occupation and income = socioeconomic status: individuals standing in a ranking of positions. Income gap within an occupation is > gap between occupations. More prestigious = physicians and least is misc food preparation. Agrarian - family made them a nobility or a peasant. New england mercantile families - old money: slave and rum money. Out-groups try to wrest prestige from older in-groups. Not everyone can be prestigious bc then no one is. Elite groups strive for social closure - monopolize the markers of prestige and deny access to others. High level of education and philanthropy (giving of time and money to worthwhile causes) also confers prestige.
