Section 718 of the criminal code - purpose of sentencing. Section 718. 1 - sentence must be proportionate to the offence and degree of responsibility of the offender. Utilitarian - focus on future of future conducts of the defendants and others who might do the same. Retributive - the past is the focus and proportionality: Denunciation - expressing societies disapproval of the behaviour. Restorative - victim-offender reconciliation, circle sentencing, family group conferencing. Absolute discharge - found guilty, but not convicted and set free. Conditional charge - found guilty, released on probation. Suspended sentence - convicted of offence, placed on probation. Intermittent sentence - sentenced to jail on weekends, other days on probation (90 day sentences only) Conditional sentence: confinement (less than 2y) and serves in the community under supervision. Concurrent - sentences are merged into one sentence and served simultaneously. Consecutive - served in sequence: one begins after one ends. Intermittent - served on a part time basis, on weekends.
