Document Summary
Chapter #13 technology, the environment, and social movements. Technology: the practical application of scientific principles. The time before hiroshima was called the age of optimism because technology was being used positively and was defined as the application of scientific principles to improve human life, but after hiroshima, optimism became pessimism. As accidents continued to take place and technology began to actually hurt others, sociologist charles perrow began to refer to them as : normal accidents. An accident that occurs inevitably although unpredictably because of the complexity of modern technology. Eg: computer programs contain thousands of conditional statements such as if x=y, do z or if a=b, do c, but as a result programs cannot be tested for all possible eventualities. German sociologist ulrich beck coined the term : risk society. A society in which technology distributes environmental dangers among all categories of the population, although to varying degrees.
