Medical model it is useful to think of abnormal behaviour as a disease. Prior to this based on supersiions (ie witches) Labelled and social sigmas mentally ill are erraic, dangerous, incompetent, inferior etc. Thomas szasz - criic of medical model disease or illness only afects the body it cannot afect the mind: abnormal behaviour involves a deviaion from a social norm. Diagnosis disinguishing one illness from another. Eiology the apparent causaion and developmental history of illness. Prognosis forecast about the probable course of an illness. Personal distress examples are depression/anxiety: only one of the above is required to be classiied as disordered, these are based on value judgement subjecive!, only considered psych disorder when considered an extreme. Myths: psychological disorders are incurable, people with psych disorders are dangerous and violent, people with psych disorders behave in bizarre ways and are very diferent from normal people.
