Document Summary

Psychology was developed in people"s search for a better self-understanding. It could be argued that psychology is as old as time. How did/ does philosophy, and physiology relate to psychology. Psychology: derives from the 16th century greek words psyche meaning soul, and logos meaning area of study. In the 18th century psychology received its formal name and meaning. Philosophy and physiology both drove the existence of early psychology. Early philosophers from 322-469 bce (aristotle, plato, socrates) contributed concepts that are directly related to psychology. Ex: the separation of mind and body, knowledge is inborn (nativism, knowledge is gained by experience (empiricism) Aristotle"s relevant theory of memory being results of three principles (similarity, contrast, and contiguity) is also a relevant, and key component to psychology today. Later on, in the renaissance period, we have other main contributors such as rene descartes. Descartes brought to light a theory of dualism, being that the mind and body are separate.
