Document Summary
Adam smith looked at different manufacturing systems. First looked at crafts-style production, where each employee did all 18 tasks. Other was each employee focusing on 1 of the tasks. Smith found that employees specializing in single tasks performed better as a whole. 10 employees specializing in particular task make 48,000 pins compared to single person only make few thousand at most. Job specialization: the process by which a division of labor occurs as different employees specialize in different tasks over time increasing efficiency and leading to higher organizational performance. Frederick w. taylor defined the techniques of scientific management. Scientific management: systematic study of relationships between people and tasks for purpose of redesigning work process to increase efficiency. Managers used scientific management selectively, resulting in increasing employee work expectations without increasing the incentive to improve. Many employees became dissatisfied and as performance improved, layoffs increased. The gilbreths: frank and lilian refined taylor"s work.
