Document Summary

The two most essential forms of data analysis in experimental chemistry are qualitative and quantitative analyses. Qualitative analyses are used in numerous scientific fields to identify compounds in a mixtures while observing their chemical reactions (college, 2003). The objective of this experiment is to separate and identify the presence of the cations lead, aluminum, copper and iron from one known solution and one unknown solution by successive precipitation. The experimental method of this lab has been obtained from the lab manual on page 21 (zumdahl, 2013). Some deviations from the manual include; increasing the heating time for the test tubes from 5 minutes to 15 minutes to complete the precipitation in step 3, and using pasteur pipettes to stir mixtures instead of glass rods. The table below is a summary and comparison of the observations between the known and unknown solution with each ion test.
