Research design analytical goals determine the type of processing used. Inventory (survey) the process of looking for and providing a preliminary assessment of archaeological sites surface artifacts may be collected but they do not represent the full range of artifacts present. Used to determine general contents of a site, its size, and structure the smaller the excavation unit (shovel test pit) the less likely materials are encountered. Used to recover information as defined in research design. Field methods lab workers need to know what was done on site to determine if it affected the amount or type of materials found. Materials will be in marked bags and stored in large boxes. Field provenience: sites, units, levels, and in situ almost all materials processed in labs will come from sites. Materials are grouped by a general provenience and are analyzed as such. Bags each collection unit will have its own field bag with its provenience labelled on the outside.
