What if ways of thinking and behaving cause significant impairment to self or others: might consider personality disorder. Personality disorders are chronic and originate in childhood: pervade every aspect of life, some evidence that a personality disorder will remit and transform into a different, subsequent personality disorder. Personality disorders are a persistent patter of emotions, cognitions, and behaviour that result in enduring emotional distress for the person affected and or others and may cause difficulties with work and relationships. Categorical vs dimensional: extreme versions of normal personalities or psychologically different than normal people, categorical approach is a convenient yes or no label. Clinicians become reifying things or making a personality disorder a real thing: dimensional approach has some advantages. Avoid arbitrary assignment of someone to a diagnostic category. Big five/five factor model of personality: extraversion, agreeableness, openness to experience, neuroticism, conscientiousness.
