PSY 3103 Chapter Notes - Chapter 8: The Roommate, Token Economy, The Terminal
Document Summary
Secondary reinforcers: there are cases in which secondary reinforcers and punishers have stronger effects on behaviour than primary reinforcers and punishers, ex: some fashion models love the social reinforcers of being looked at and photographed. Sometimes can be worse than the primary reinforce, suicide, which is physical pain. Secondary punishment= committing suicide rather than facing social disgrace. We call this losing face": most people respond to many secondary reinforcers and punishers. Many of these stimuli are determinants of behaviour especially in long chains of operants where primary reinforcers are at the end. Secondary reinforcement follows the behaviour closely and helps to provide more immediate reinforcement before the pins fall down. Early feedback: ex: the sight of the dog is a secondary punisher because it is a good predictor of being bitten. The sight of the dog punishes and suppresses approach to the dog before being bitten and neg reinforces avoidance or self- protection.
