Document Summary

Ethology: the branch of biology that deals with evolutionarily adapted behaviors eg. social interaction for protection and food. They believe that parents nurture and protect their children so that their children can grow up healthy and pass on their genes. Children can form an attachment with anyone: mothers, father, grandparents, etc. There are 4 phases of attachment in the evolutionary perspective: preattachment (birth to 6-8 weeks): in this stage, children and parents set the stage for their (cid:396)elatio(cid:374)ship. Fathers usually play physically with their children while mothers act as primary caregivers. There are 4 kinds of relations that have been proven through the strange situation: secure: baby upset when mother leaves, but returns to her when she comes back and starts playing again. Some have criticized the strange situation for its emphasis on the leaving and returning of mothers. That is why the attachment q-set measures more behaviors of infants (smiling when mother appears, etc) to measure relationships better.
