PSY 2110 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Social Perception, Personality Psychology, Collectivism
Document Summary
Social percepion: the process of collecing and interpreing informaion about another person"s individual characterisics. Warmth is seen as a central trait that alters the meaning of the target"s whole personality, whereas politeness is a more peripheral trait that has only speciic and delimited efects. Central trait: a disposiional characterisic viewed by social perceivers as integral to the organizaion of personality. Peripheral trait: a trait whose perceived presence does not signiicantly change the overall interpretaion of a person"s personality. The greater inluence of iniial informaion is generally known as a primacy efect. Primacy efect: the tendency for earlier informaion to be more inluenial in social percepion and interpretaion. The results presented so far suggest that people do not simply add together the bits of informaion they receive about a target (summaion), but instead acively construct meaning based on their ideas about how diferent personality characterisics hang together.
