Document Summary

Chapter 13: development of the self: as babies approach the age 2, they display and increasing awareness of the self. Pronouns, such as me and mine, as well as the child"s name, enter the vocabulary during the second year of life. Self-recognition appears at different ages for different infants: what could be the source of these differences, one hypothesis is that self-recognition relates to temperament. Babies who react strongly in stress situations are thought to develop a sense of self earlier than do other babies in order to deal better with the intensity of the stimulation they experience. Infants who react most strongly to vaccinations at 6 months of age also are most likely to show mirror self-recognition at 18 months: another source of individual differences is attachment. Children who are securely attached have a better understanding of both personal agency and physical characteristics than children in other attachment classifications.
