Document Summary
Sensation: the experience resulting from the stimulation of a sense. Perception: the interpretation of sensory stimulation based on experience. Attention: the selection of particular sensory input for perceptual and cognitive processing and the exclusion of competing input. Explaining perceptual development is particular form of nature vs nurture debate. Child born with minimal ability to take in and makes sense of sensory information-- emphasis on role of experience. Through experience babies learn to connect sights with sounds, touch, vision, and so on. Not as accepted anymore but modern research does show experience plays a big role. Objects in the world give off physical energy that is already organized and can be perceived in its entirety. Perceptual development consists of a child"s increasing sensitivity to the organization of this energy and to which properties of objects and people remain stable and which properties change. For example, baby can detect when talking does not line up with lip movement.
