Document Summary
Personality: an individual characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling and acting. Psychodynamic theories: view personality with a focus on the unconscious and the importance of childhood experiences. The theories descended from freud"s psychoanalysis (focused on clinical attention on the unconscious mind) After unsuccessful trials with hypnosis to try and figure out if some things were caused by the unconscious, Freud turned to free association: in psychoanalysis, a method of exploring the unconscious in which the person relaxes and says whatever comes to mind, no matter how trivial or embarrassing. He thought it would allow him to retrace the line, following a chain of thought leading into the patients unconscious. Psychoanalysis: freud"s theory of personality that attributes thoughts and actions to unconscious motives and conflicts; the techniques used in treating psychological disorders by seeking to expose and interpret unconscious tensions. He believed our conscious mind was like an ice burg floating on top of the water.
