POL 2104 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Positive Liberty, Social Democracy, Modernization Theory
Document Summary
Democracy: political power residing with the people. Political power exercised directly or indirectly through participation, competition, and liberty. Is in keeping with the ideology of liberalism. Social democracy emphasizes collective welfare more than individual rights (they curtail individual freedom in the name of greater equality) These variations in democracy affect the degree of state autonomy and capacity, and in turn, affect the type of state that results. Greek democracy allowed the public (excluding women, children, foreigners and slaves) to participate directly in the affairs of government, choosing policies and making governing decisions. The roman empire laid out the concept of republicanism which emphasized the separation of powers within a state and the representation of the public through elected of cials. Gave us the idea of legislative bodies (the senate) Magna carta curbed the rights of the king and laid the foundation for an early form of legislature.
