Document Summary
The challenge of third world development by howard handelman. It is the scope and persistence of the developing world"s political, economic, and social problems that draw attention of development scholars. For many years these developing countries have experienced very little political or economic development. Third world glosses over many political and socioeconomic differences among its members. Worst term we have, except for all the others . Despite their many differences (in countries), there are enough commonalities among tw countries to make the category useful. High inequality (among countries and within them) High mortality rates, health issues (communicable diseases) Per capita income had a negative correlation (as one goes up, one goes down) with poverty but was not absolute. A country"s rate of poverty and mortality tends to re ect its per capita income and the degree of economic inequality. Tw poverty correlates with poor social conditions, high infant mortality, low literacy, etc. Must extend and improve education to combat this.
