Document Summary

Major cancers are breast and prostate cancer-followed by lung cancer. Cancer has different kinds of malignant growths which is not responsive to regulatory cues for growth/division invading nearby tissues & spreading to other tissues at far away. It is alterations in the dna of a somatic cell. Cancer cells proliferate in an uncontrolled manner, forming malignant tumors. Malignant tumors metastasize secondary tumors: uncontrolled growth: division beyond normal limits, metastasis: spread to other locations in the body by blood or lymph. Properties of a cancer cell malignant cells do not respond to regulatory cues for growth and division. Capacity for growth&development: normal cell & malignant cell both have similar rates of proliferation. Regulation of growth&development: normal cell has lots of control than malignant cell (inhibitory & stimulatory signals) Similarities between different types of cancer cells: aberrant(abnormal) chromosome numbers (aneuploidy, dna mutations, translocations abnormal cell cycle checkpoint progression, fail to allow apoptosis, high metabolic requirements.
