Skeletal cartilage features btwn dense ct and bone (tough but flexible) Located in external ear and epiglottis these areas need to be able to rebound back to position: epiglottis needs to bend to cover the opening of the larynx when we swallow. Function maintain shape while giving lots of flexibility: fibrocartilage rows of chondrocytes alternating w thick collagen fibers; great tensile strength. Located in intervertebral discs, pubic symphysis, discs of knee joints (where hyaline cartilage meets a ligament or a tendon) areas subject to pressure and stretch. Function tensile strength with ability to absorb compressive shock. Bone is a living dynamic tissue that reacts to its environment. Reacts to the amount of force applied to it increasing both the density and the amount of roughening on the bone or decreasing density when force is reduced or eliminated (deposition vs resorption)
