Anxiety has the earliest onset of all disorders. Neurotic disorders: people show maladaptive and self-defeating behaviours, they are not incoherent or dangerous. Emotion involving fight or flight response of the autonomic nervous system. Adaptive value-- allows us to escape (instantaneous response). Panic attack : fear response without any external danger cues. Symptoms nearly identical to fear response, except panic attacks are accompanied with: Response pattern (contrasting fear): complex blend of unpleasant emotions and cognitions that are much more oriented to the future and more spread out than fear. No fight or flight response like fear, but prepares the person. Could be any combination of these in either fear/anxiety (loosely coupled) Worried about possible future events, negative mood, self preoccupation. Tendency to avoid situations but not immediate urge to flee. Fear & anxiety can be classically conditioned by events that have reliably predicted other negative events or by thoughts and images that are conditioned stimuli.
