PSYC 217 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Mental Chronometry, Construct Validity, Blind Experiment
Document Summary
Conducting experiments chapter 9: distinguish between straightforward and staged manipulations of an independent variable. Straightforward manipulations: is when you manipulate (operationally define) your iv with visual, verbal, or written material. e. g. job searching study. Manipulation was whether they used masculine or feminine nouns in the job advertisements. Staged manipulations: is when you stage an event during the experiment to manipulate your iv. That is one of the experimenters pretends to be a participant or bystander or such. e. g. the electric shock experiment. Our experiment in lab: describe three ways to measure dependent variables: selfreport, behavioral and physiological. Report: is used to measure human thoughts and behaviors. Rate of behavior: how often a behavior occurs within a certain time period. Reaction time: how quickly a response occurs after a stimulus. Physiological measure: recording of a response of the body. Eeg, mri: discuss sensitivity of a dependent variable, contrasting floor effects and ceiling effects.
