Psychoanalysis therapy: first major psychological therapy, developed by freud, listener interprets patient"s memories & dreams, reduces anxiety thru insight. Insight therapy: aims to improve psychological functioning by increasing awareness of underlying motives & defenses, e. g. psychodynamic & humanistic therapy. Psychodynamic therapy: uncovers repressed childhood experiences, bring unconscious wishes & feelings to light, gain insight, work thru issues. Humanistic therapy: emphasizes people"s inherent potential for self-fulfillment, assumptions, conscious > unconscious, present & future > past, problem is caused by the environment. Active listening: carl rogers, empathic listening where listener echoes, restates & clarifies. Behavioral therapy: learn adaptive & extinguish maladaptive behaviors, uses classical & operant conditioning. Operant conditioning: reinforce behavior thru reward: reinforcement: increases probability of repeating behavior, punishment: decreases probability of repeating behavior, avoidance: do behavior not in front of person delivering punishment, escape: move away from person delivering punishment. Counterconditioning: uses classical conditioning to evoke new responses to stimuli.
