Who, what, when, where, why (if possible) & how. These 6 provide a context for data values. If you can"t answer who and what, you don"t have any data and you don"t have any useful information example: Variables: the characteristics recorded about each individual or case. Usually shown as the columns of a data table, and they should have a name that. Rows: who identifies what has been measured. Individual cases about whom (or which if they"re not people) A common place to find the who of the table is the leftmost column. Cases: in the table, cases are the individual book purchase orders. Records: rows in a database (in the example above, purchase records) Data represents the specific values of variables.
