Statistics (subject): a way of reasoning, along with a collection of tools and methods, designed to help us understand the world. Statistics can help us make the leap from the data we have at hand to an understanding of the world at large. This course will help us answer questions such as: The answers we get from these depend on our understanding of variation. The key to learning from data is understanding the variation that is all around us. Data vary, people are different, economic conditions are different, etc. Variation means that we can never repeat things exactly. Everything varies, but we are not sure how things vary uncertainty.
