Textbook notes: methods of research are dependent on how the researcher perceives soc, as a science- seeks to quantify and measure social life, as an art- seeks to produce rich meanings ppl assign in life. Acquiescence bias- respondents check off answers to questions without thinking. Social desirability bias- ppl try to answer questions the way they believe the research would want. Random sampling, sample size, response rate: sample must be representative, proper randomization needed to reduce biases[intentional/unintentional, simple random sampling- each person in pop. Put on list, then a proportion of them chosen at random: response rate- how fast ppl complete survey; percentage. Field research: aim is to collect rich, nuanced data by going into field to observe + talk directly to ppl. Documentation: common for formal organizations (police forces, law firms, etc. , documents can be analyzed to provide complete picture.
