The wason selection tasks have been used to evaluate logic vs. social logic. Research has identified brain differences when the problem has a social dimension. Social exchange is cooperation for mutual benefit. Ex) economic trades, reciprocal gift giving, and helping with the expectation that someday the favor will be returned. If these types of social exchange have been important throughout our evolutionary history, then we should be sensitive to those who accept benefits without fulfilling their side of the exchange they are cheaters . We have evolved a cognitive mechanism that is sensitive to cheating cheater detection module. Cheater detection is aimed at individuals who break the rules of a social interaction. People are better able to solve social exchange problems than non-social exchange problems. One criticism of the cheater detection module interpretation has to do with familiarity. Patients with frontal love lesions perform poorly on social exchange wason tasks as compared to individuals without brain damage.
