Chapter 4 indicates that the trainee"s motivation influences where attention is directed they attend to things in the environment that are most important to them materials. Eliminating distractions room must be comfortable temperature (21-22 degrees c, humidity at 50%) Attracting attention info that is attended to is transformed into symbolically coded long term memory: its called up when the appropriate cues are present before symbolic encoding, connections b/t new and old info can be established. Symbolic coding and cognitive organization once appropriate prior learning is recalled, trainee is ready to encode new info. Symbolic coding- the translation of the info into symbols meaningful to the individual. Cognitive organization- the organizing of these symbols into the existing cognitive structure through associations with previously stored info.
