PSYCH291 Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: Random Assignment, Regression Testing, Partial Correlation
Document Summary
Often interested in causation but many psychological constructs are not open to experimentation. Multivariate correlational research as way to move beyond "covariance" to address. Measure same variable in same people at different points in time. Cross-sectional correlations (test to see whether two variables, measured at the same pint in time, are correlated) Tv violence 3rd grade -> r = 0. 21 -> aggression 3rd grade. Tv violence 13th grade > r= 0. 05 -> aggression 13th grade. Autocorrelations (determine the correlation of one variable with itself, measured on two different occasions) Tv violence 3rd grade -> r= 0. 05 -> tv violence 13th grade. Aggression 3rd grade -> r = 0. 38 -> aggression 13th grade. Cross-lag correlations (show whether the earlier measure of one variable is associated with the later measure of the other variable) thus, address the directionality problem and help establish temporal precedence. Using multivariate correlations to rule out third variables however, does not address third variables.
