PSYCH253 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Automatic Behavior, Social Facilitation, Deindividuation
Document Summary
Group: two or more people who, for longer than a few moments, interact with and influence one another and perceive one another as us . Mere presence = the people are not competing, do not reward or punish, and do nothing except be present as a passive audience or as co-actors. Co-actors: a group of people working simultaneously and individually on a non- competitive task. Social facilitation: the tendency of people to perform simple or well-learned tasks better when others are present; the strengthening of dominant responses owing to the presence of others. Other studies revealed that on some tasks the presence of others hinders performance ex: cockroaches learn mazes more slowly in the presence of others. Others" presence arousal strengthens dominant responses either 1) enhances easy behaviours or 2) impairs difficult behaviours. The effect of others" presence increases with their number crowd many people. Being in a crowd may interferes even with well-learned, automatic behaviors.
