Perception is the process of interpreting the messages of out sense to provide order and meaning to the environment. Perception helps us sort out and organize the complex and varied input received by our senses of sight, smell, touch, taste, and hearing. The perceiver"s experience, needs, and emotions can affect their perception of a target - most importantly, the perceivers experiences. Frequently, our needs unconsciously influence our perceptions by causing us to perceive what we wish to perceive. In some cases, our perceptual system serves to defend us against unpleasant emotions. This phenomenon is known as perceptual defence: a target. Social identity theory is a theory that states that people form perceptions of themselves based on their personal characteristics and memberships in social categories. In addition to forming self-perceptions based on our social memberships, we also form perceptions of others based on their memberships in social categories.
