PSYCH218 Chapter Notes - Chapter Terror Management: Terror Management Theory, Word Game, Mortality Salience
Document Summary
Psych 218 readings: putting the terror in terror management theory. Tmt states that the awareness of death has the ability to create anxiety, and affect well- being: psychological buffers (self-worth) protect against this. This study demonstrates that heightening the awareness of death increases anxiety and decreases well-being for those who lack buffers. It is at odds with the motive to survive. Little work has focused on whether death awareness causes anxiety i people who do not possess appropriate psych buffers: watching a graphic video about death increased anxiety among participants who did not have appropriate self worth. Participants were first assessed for trait levels of psych buffers (meaning in life, self- worth ) Next, death awareness was experimentally heightened (mortality salience) and then anxiety was measured. The effects of mortality salience on death anxiety among individuals who varied in trait levels (buffers) of meaning of life were examined.
