By the time children enter the preschool years, a large junk of cognitive development has taken place. But they do have a long way to cognitive maturity. Transition from sensorimotor thinking to preoperational thinking. Preoperational stage ages 2-7 use of symbols to represent objects and. Gradually become good at using common symbols ; words, gestures, graphs and events maps and models. Preschoolers thinking is limited compared to that of school-age children due to egocentrism, centration and appearance as reality (preoperational characteristics) They believe that others see and understand the world as they do. Egocentrism difficulty in seeing the world from another"s perspective. Not understand that other"s have different ideas and feelings. Explains why babies nod on the phone and assumes they can see that too part of infant egocentrism. Animism: crediting inanimate objects with life and life-like properties. Centration narrowly focused thought one aspect of problem and ignore rest.
