Encoding: the cognitive process(es) by which info is translated into mental or internal representation. Retrieval: the processes by which stored info is brought back to conscious awareness. Modal model of memory: if is received, processed and stored differently for each type of memory. Short-term memory: attended info that is stored for periods of 20-30 seconds aka primary memory. Long-term memory: info needed for longer periods of time eg. correct spelling, tests, names holds incoming info for long periods of time, maybe even permanently. Separate sensory memories exist for each sensory modality: visual, auditory, olfactory, gustatory, tactile. There is two types of sensory memory: icon, echo. The icon: a sensory memory for visual stimuli. The after-image of lighting or a name in our sensory memory. Only visual stimuli, other stimuli can only be related to this stimuli.
