Document Summary
Behavior is the function of the person and the environment. Studied the interaction between the person and the situation. Mimicry: taking on for ourselves the behaviors, emotional displays, and facial expressions of others. Chameleon effect (chartrand & bargh, 1999): describes how people mimic others non-consciously, automatically copying others" behaviors even without realizing it. Social norms: the (usually unwritten) guidelines for how to behave in social contexts. Influence the manners we use, to the amount of alcohol we drink, food we eat, clothes we wear, and even our beliefs and attitudes. Social loafing: occurs when an individual puts less effort into working on a task with others. Includes physical activities, cognitive activities (ie. songwriting), and across all types of groups regardless of age, gender and nationality. Low efficacy beliefs: occurs if the tasks are too difficult/complex so no one knows where to start. Overcome by structuring tasks so people know exactly what to do.
