Debated over having an individual leader or a committee. Fear of one person holding too much power. Didn"t want to resemble europe and be subject to similar problems that they face. To avoid big state vs little state arguments over committee representative, the founding fathers decided an individual would hold the presidency. The presidency would be separate from congress. The system established by the constitution to elect the president. Each state has a group of electors. The ;public votes for electors who vote for the president. Each state would have the same number of electors as they has members in congress. Electors cast their vote for the presidential candidate who won that state (usually) Each power the constitution grants to congress, the presidency or the judiciary is balanced by a checking power assigned to another branch. Over-ride a presidential veto with 2/3 majority. Slaves would count as 3/5 of a person in state census when counting population.
