Focuses on the meaning and interpretations of interactions between people. Symbolic interactionism - how people interpret social situations and negotiate meaning of these situations with others. Focuses on making people active agents in their social world. People interact with humans and objects based upon the meanings those objects hold in that persons life. These meanings emerge from actions among people. Meanings of objects and people can be modi ed when their meanings t different social situations. Interactionist theory of criminology focuses on interactions among criminals. Labelling - deviance is not a quality of the act but of the label that others attach to it. The application of the label and the response to the label may result in a person being given a delinquent identity. Labelling process is not always accurate or fair. Labels are often applied to some people and not others and application is sometimes biased.
