Like domestic violence, social attitudes in regard to sexual assault have also changed. While the common law regarded the rape of a woman as a serious crime, this was because it was treated more as a crime against patriarchal property than the violation of the will of a human being. If a woman says, (cid:494)no(cid:495), the law now recognizes that she means (cid:494)no(cid:495), not (cid:494)yes. The feminist claim that women ought to be able to exercise autonomy over their own bodies also manifested itself in campaigns to decriminalize abortion and prostitution. Moves to legalize prostitution followed in some jurisdictions. In respect of the civil law, feminist law reformers have addressed countless anomalies across the entire spectrum of law. These issues have been complicated by contemporary forms of family formation, including de facto and homosexual relationships, which have caused law reform agencies to look to feminist legal scholars for advice as a matter of course.
