Document Summary

You can predict the path of a child"s life, depending on which social group they were born into. Relatedness - the socially organized ties that connect people in a variety of different ways. Relatedness is always impacted by broader structures of power, wealth and meaning. Kinship systems - social relationships that are derived from universal human experiences of mating, birth and nurturance. Marriage - culturally based relationships based on mating. Descent - those relationships based on birth and therefore de nes the social categories to which people belong. Adoption - kinship relationships based on nurturance, not by biology. Marriage is not the same thing as mating, decent is not the same thing as birth and adoption is not the same thing as nurturance. Human experiences of mating, birth and nurturance are ambiguous and differ across. Kinship can be traced through the mothers side or the fathers side, depending on the culture societies.
